Thoughts from the Senior Unit

We try to keep everyone informed about what is going on in the Senior Unit. Sometimes it gets away from us as we go about the process of learning.

Today we have a some blurbs about what students have been doing in the Senior Unit. Enjoy!

Blurb 1

The year sevens of this table (Foxx, Lachlan). Have been doing exhibition With Mr. Semmler and Mr. Helbig, Foxx is in the Agriculture group and Lachlan in the Olympics group. We have all finished writing our lines of inquiry and central idea. It has been fun for most.

Year6: in Uoi we are making infomercials on a NASA spin off technology I am doing indigestible toothpaste.

Picture books - An aspect of the senior unit- By Shay, Ethan and Jenna.

In literacy we are making our own picture books. We plan our characters and storyline, then we start to make a storyboard. We choose what happens in the story. To get inspiration we read some picture books together. We had to think about the size of text and amount as well as pictures and how they help tell the story. The structure needs to be planned out. After we need to edit the book.

 In literacy we are writing our own picture books about whatever we want with our imagination. We are really enjoying scripting these stories. Year 7’s are really enjoying their exhibition to show off their skills. In the year 6 math we have been learning about fractions and shape and decimals and the year 7’s are learning about chance in gambling.

In the senior unit we do many different activities as a big group or even individually.

Christian studies

In Christian studies at the moment we have, individually, been making picture books. We are basing them on stories from the bible, they can be any story but not the well-known ones: 

· Well known ones- (Noahs ark, Jesus feeds the five thousand, Jonah and the whale. Etc.)

The books have to be based on the moral of the story, the reason we are making them is so the younger children in the school have better understandings of the stories and so they learn to know some of the lesser known stories.

In the senior unit the year 7’s have been doing exhibition. There is 10 groups with 8 central ideas. We have also been learning about the probability and chance of gambling. The task is to choose a form of gambling and research the probability of wining. The year 6’s have been learning about explorers and exploration in UOI.  We have made a couple of clips about spinoff technology and an explorer of our choice.  Also in maths we have been learning about decimals and shape.

This year in the Senior Unit we have learnt lots in different subjects. In literacy this year we have been working on narratives, persuasive texts and procedures, we are now currently working at making our own picture book. Maths this year we have split into two groups the, Yr6s and the Yr7s. In the Yr6 group they have been adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions and all year we have been practicing our times tables in speed sums we are now doing shape and decimals. In the Yr7 maths we are looking at gambling and researching types of gambling. In UOI we have split into two groups, the Yr6s and the Yr7s. The Yr7s are doing exhibition they are looking at where to find primary information and not secondary information that are also looking at research questions. In the Yr6 UOI they are looking at Government and Parliament they have just went on an excursion to Parliament and Government house.

Year 6

In unit of inquiry we have being doing  spin off technology we have to explain what it does how it work what it spun off in to and why it was invented and make an infomercial and show the products and where it was first.

Year 7

In unit of inquiry the year 7s have been doing exhibition I’m in a group for fishing and we have been working very hard to get all of our stuff started. We have made our own lines of inquiry and central idea which took time to come up with. Then we would sit down (the whole class) and talk about where we are up to.

In unit of inquiry the year 7s have been doing exhibition and in year 6 we have been looking at an exploration unit our central idea is exploration leads to discovery and develops new understanding we have been making infomercials on a space exploration like memory foam and portable vacuum cleaners and previously we have been looking at explorers and making videos about them.
